枯山水是日本庭园的精华，实质是以砂代水，以石代岛的做法。用极少的构成要素达到极大的意韵效果，追求禪意的枯寂美。
枯山水有两种寓意物件，一是山涧的激流或瀑布，日本称之为枯瀧；另一种是海岸和岛屿；池泉是微缩的真山水，池泉一般是园景的中心，枯山水与池泉都是在自然佈局的水池中设溪坑石代表岛屿，与岸相连的驳岸称中岛按不同位置分别称为龟岛、鹤岛、蓬莱等名，立在水中或砂中的岩石有更多名称，在此不再赘述。

ps由于枯山水庭园以砂石为主，因此也比较容易将沙带进屋内，需每天做环境清理。
